Deadly crash after Tesla stops on I-70 prompts investigation

Independence, Missouri, police said a vehicle with a mechanical issue caused a three-vehicle crash Sunday on Interstate 70 that claimed the life of a Lake Winnebago man.

Police were called to the westbound lanes of I-70 at Little Blue Parkway at 8:17 p.m. Sunday to investigate a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Police said, at the time, that three vehicles were involved and authorities were working to determine the cause of that crash.

Investigators on Monday released additional details in the crash.

Investigators said a 2019 Tesla had a mechanical issue that caused the vehicle to lose power and stop in the middle of the interstate.

As a result, police said other vehicles on the highway were unable to avoid crashing into the Tesla.

The driver of the Tesla, 74-year-old Terry L. Siegel of Lake Winnebago, Missouri, was killed in that crash.

Police said this incident remains under investigation.
