Diavik: Rio Tinto Ups Full-Year Diamond Output
Rio Tinto announced it has updated its full-year diamond
output at Diavik, its diamond mine in Northwest Territories, Canada. According
to IDEX Online, Rio Tinto expects a 3% increase to 3.84 million carats.
In Q4, production was up 27% – from 910,000 carats to 1.155
million carats. Rio Tinto, according to the report, is forecasting “an output
of 5 million carats to 6 million carats for 2022.”
In November 2021, Rio Tinto purchased the 40% share held by
Dominion Diamond Mines in Diavik to become the sole owner of the mine. Rio
Tinto’s iconic Argyle mine, in Australia, closed in November 2020.
