Diavik: Rio Tinto Ups Full-Year Diamond Output

Rio Tinto announced it has updated its full-year diamond output at Diavik, its diamond mine in Northwest Territories, Canada. According to IDEX Online, Rio Tinto expects a 3% increase to 3.84 million carats.

In Q4, production was up 27% – from 910,000 carats to 1.155 million carats. Rio Tinto, according to the report, is forecasting “an output of 5 million carats to 6 million carats for 2022.”

In November 2021, Rio Tinto purchased the 40% share held by Dominion Diamond Mines in Diavik to become the sole owner of the mine. Rio Tinto’s iconic Argyle mine, in Australia, closed in November 2020.
