ExxonMobil spuds second well on Canje block offshore Guyana
TORONTO – The drillship Stena DrillMAX has spudded the ExxonMobil-operated Sapote-1 exploration well on the Canje block offshore Guyana.
According to Eco (Atlantic) Oil & Gas, which has an
indirect interest via partner JHI Associates, Sapote-1 will test Upper
Cretaceous reservoirs in a stratigraphic trap, with drilling set to last for up
to 60 days.
The location is 225 km (140 mi) northeast of Georgetown in
2,550 m (8,366 ft) of water. This is the second well on the block following the
unsuccessful Jabillo-1 earlier this summer.
Eco also noted the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Guyana’s recent statement that ExxonMobil has applied for environmental
authorization for a 12-well exploration and appraisal drilling program in the
Canje block in 2022.
In addition, Eco has exploration interests offshore Namibia
and is monitoring nearby drilling activity. The company expects TotalEnergies
to spud the ultra-deepwater Venus-1 well using the Maersk Venturer during 4Q,
around the same time the Valaris DS-10 is due to drill Shell’s Graff-1 well.
