Top FBI Official Failed To Report Romantic Relationship With Subordinate

A Justice Department report made public Thursday revealed that a high-ranking FBI official failed to report she was romantically involved with a subordinate. To make matters worse, the senior official oversaw a personnel decision involving her love interest.

The report did not name the official by name, but The Washington Post identified her as Jill Tyson, citing current and former law enforcement officials. In the report, she stands accused of failing to report the relationship, take part in a personnel decision, and allow it to “disrupt the workplace.” The report does not accuse her of harassing or mistreating the person.

The inappropriate relationship is a direct violation of the bureau’s policy.

After reporting the relationship, the other person was moved to another department within the bureau. It is still undetermined what will happen to Tyson. FBI Inspector General Michael Horowitz said his report on Tyson had been forwarded to the FBI and Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility for review. It’s not clear what repercussions Tyson is facing.

After holding several positions with the Justice Department, Tyson joined the FBI in 2018. She is currently the bureau’s Office of Congressional Affairs assistant director since 2019. In her current role, she manages all FBI interactions with Congress. She has a close working relationship with FBI Director Chris Wray.
