Liechtenstein prince in hot water after killing huge Romanian bear

Yet another European royal is in trouble after going on a hunting trip.

Several years ago, King Juan Carlos of Spain had to abdicate after he was caught on an African hunting trip with a woman who was not his wife and now a prince from Lichtenstein has Romania in a boil over a bear.

Prince Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein, the 32-year-old nephew of the principality’s reigning Prince Hans-Adam II, shot and killed Arthur, a huge (and hugely popular) 17-year-old brown bear in March.

The killing was not licensed, and some of those involved may not have had weapons permits, according to CNN affiliate Antena 3.

Prince Emanuel had a four-day hunting permit from the Ministry of Environment to shoot a young female bear that had been attacking farms in Covasna county, Transylvania, but instead went after Arthur in a protected area.

Gabriel Paun, the president of Agent Green, said in a statement on the group’s website that he “didn’t understand how the prince could confuse a young bear that had been stealing chickens from a village with the largest male bear that existed in the depths of the forest.”

Trophy hunting in Romania, which has the biggest bear population in Europe outside Russia, has been outlawed since 2016.

Repeated attempts to contact the prince’s estate were unsuccessful, The Associated Press reported. Switzerland’s Blick newspaper quoted the prince as saying he wouldn’t comment on the matter.

Romanians have slammed the website of the family’s Riegersburg Castle with comments and TripAdvisor says it has temporarily stopped reviews of the castle, according to CNN.
