EU Ambassador Urges Albanian Prosecutors to ‘Follow the Money’ in Investigations
The EU Ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca, has encouraged Albanian prosecutors and judges to “follow the money” in their investigations and cases.
On the anniversary of the killing of Italian magistrate
Giovanni Falcone by the mafia, Soreca, an Italian himself, praised the justice
reform in Albania for creating many a Falcone.
Falcone, a national hero and a symbol of the Italian justice
fighting the mafia, always followed the money trail in his investigations,
Soreca said, and his principles are still applicable.
“Albania has taken important steps ahead in the fight
against organized crime and money laundering. Is it enough? There surely is a
lot of work to do, it should be, and the follow-the-money concept should be
implemented. We will succeed. The justice reform is creating many a Giovanni
Falcone,” Soreca stated from Korca on Sunday.
The ambassador refused to comment on the banning of the
former President Sali Berisha and his family from entering the US, saying that
he fully respects the US government’s decision.
Soreca reiterated that Albania is ready to sit in accession
talks with the European Union.
The European leaders are expected to discuss the start of
talks with Albania and North Macedonia in June.
