DarkSide hacker group says it targeted Toshiba

NHK has learned that the hacker group believed to be behind the cyberattack on a major US fuel pipeline is claiming to have also attacked a Toshiba entity in France. Toshiba is investigating the facts.

A Japanese information security firm, Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions, says Russia-based DarkSide made the claim on a site it set up on the dark web shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday, Japan time.

In a statement on the site, the group said it hacked into the system of a Toshiba entity in France and stole confidential information.

The group claims it stole over 740 gigabytes of data that includes information on management, new businesses and personal data.

Earlier this week, the FBI confirmed that DarkSide ransomware was responsible for the attack that forced Colonial Pipeline to shut down its supplies of gasoline and other fuel.

DarkSide is known to encrypt and steal sensitive information of companies by using ransomware and demand payment for the unlocking of data. If the ransom is not paid, it threatens to release the stolen information.
