Jona Rechnitz not a target of federal investigation in Los Angeles
Mayor de Blasio donor Jona Rechnitz, who cooperated with a federal investigation of City Hall, is an apparent victim of a diamond robbery under investigation by the FBI in Los Angeles, prosecutors revealed in new papers.
The legal troubles surrounding Rechnitz’s new career as a
diamond dealer are connected to a larger criminal probe into a property
overlooking Beverly Hills known as “the Mountain,” Los Angeles prosecutors
wrote in a filing Wednesday. Prosecutors do not consider Rechnitz a target of
the investigation, a separate letter viewed by the Daily News shows. Rather, it
appears Rechnitz’s company, Jadelle, was robbed of diamonds he held on
consignment, Los Angeles Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Boyle writes. “Some or
all” of those diamonds were recently recovered, according to the prosecutor.
The new disclosure casts doubt on claims by former jails
union boss Norman Seabrook and the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association
that Rechnitz returned to a life of crime in Los Angeles after his historic
cooperation with the feds in New York.
Rechnitz has faced an avalanche of lawsuits from creditors
who claim he swiped their bling, including L.A. playboy businessman Victor
Noval. That same bling may have been stolen from Rechnitz, according to
prosecutors, who emphasized the investigation is ongoing.
Last month the feds moved to seize more than $100 million in
assets, including The Mountain property itself, from corporate entities
allegedly controlled by Noval. Boyle writes that Noval’s dispute with Rechnitz
involves funds “traceable” to the scam involving The Mountain.
Noval’s attorney Ron Richards did not respond to an inquiry.
He’s previously denied wrongdoing.
The prosecutor asked a bankruptcy judge to pause the lawsuit
brought by Rechnitz’s creditors because it will interfere with the criminal
probe.
Rechnitz is appealing a sentence of five months in prison
and five months of home confinement. He vowed at sentencing he was pursuing a
legitimate career as a diamond dealer to stars like Kim Kardashian. Manhattan
federal prosecutors hailed Rechnitz as one of the most best cooperating
witnesses in New York history.
