Huawei Remains The World’s Largest Smartphone Manufacturer

In April this year, Counterpoint statistics published a report showing Huawei surpassed Samsung in the smartphone market, shipping more devices than anyone. Now, the same company reports Huawei is still at the top in May, with Samsung breathing down their neck.

In 2020, smartphone sales have seen an unprecedented decline, caused by the global pandemic. Consumers have started thinking twice when investing in a new smartphone, and many chose to purchase cheaper models rather than premium devices.

Despite the geopolitical issues surrounding Huawei, it still manages to get a good portion of the market share. The company was deprived of Google’s services and forced to use AOSP Android. Even if the difference between Samsung and Huawei is just 0.1%, it’s still impressive how the Chinese giant achieves these numbers.

In 2018, before all the bans and restrictions Huawei was predicting it will be the world’s largest phone maker by 2020. This seemed bonkers at the time, but it looks like they are not that far off. In the first quarter of 2020, Huawei was right behind Samsung on smartphone shipments, according to Counterpoint Statistics. Who knows if Huawei didn’t have the geopolitical problems it had, it might just have been the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer.
