Arunachal MLA Urges PM Modi To Ban Chinese 'Spy Equipment' Huawei In India, Says It Can Act As Mass Surveillance Tool

Arunachal Pradesh MLA Ninong Ering on Thursday (3 July) urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei in India, saying that the company was a "spy equipment" of China, posing a big threat to the privacy of Indian citizens, and can "act as a mass surveillance tool".

In a letter to PM Modi, the former Arunachal East MP and current MLA from Northeastern state's Pasighat west assembly constituency praised Central government for banning 59 Chinese apps over national security concerns.

"I am writing this letter in the context of the threat that Huawei, a Chinese company, poses to the security of the nation," Ering said.

Ering cited Huawei's origins and the work and how it was bound by laws in China to cooperate and share information to the Chinese government without any refusal.

He further said that it would be "more difficult to find out if any such demand has been made" by the Chinese government "given the opaqueness of the Chinese regime".

Ering, who was also the union minister in UPA government, said that considerning China's history, there should be no compromise with the national security.

"Therefore, it would be advisable to put a ban on products by Huawei as they are a potential threat to sovereignty and security of the nation and its citizens," Ering said.
