2 new fraud charges laid against Niagara financier
Niagara police have laid two new fraud-related charges
against Peter Corbière.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake financier was the subject of a 2018
CBC News investigation after entrepreneurs said his loan offers left them in a
lurch.
Niagara police started an investigation back in October 2019
following a report "of a suspicious failed business arrangement," the
service noted in a media release Tuesday.
Corbière, who had previously been arrested after
investigations by the central fraud unit, was taken into custody again on May 4
and charged with fraud over $5,000 and false pretences.
The 63-year-old was released on a promise to appear and is
scheduled to be in court in St. Catharines on May 27.
These are the third set of charges Corbière is facing.
None of the allegations has been proven in court.
In February, following a "lengthy investigation"
by the Niagara fraud unit, he was charged with fraud over $5,000 and false
pretences.
He was also arrested last spring and charged by the Ontario
Provincial Police with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and false pretences
over $5,000.
